Unit 10

This was the conversation I had with my clients. The task was to make a newsletter and a documentary about Islington Sobell Boxing  Club. I have arranged to go to the club and meet the organisers of the boxing club in the Sobell Centre in Holloway.  These pictures show that I have organised a time and date that I agreed with the organisers.  I went to the boxing club on the 19/11/18 and I was able to take some picture of the oragnisers and the kids practicing and having boxing matches. I was able to talk to some of the kids and find out what interests them to be in this club. Also, speaking to the club owner; he was telling me about how this was the only boxing club where the kids don't have to pay to box and how it is funded by the Metropolitan Police. Club has the age range from 10-17 attended and it runs on Mondays and Wednesdays. We discussed the details and everything they would want including the colour scheme, information, images etc. They wanted a newsletter, double sided tell the readers the information about the club, how to join and what they do.

Firstly, to start this project I needed to grab the logo of the boxing club off of the web. The only images I could find were ones which were cut off so I had to go on photoshop, bring the two images together and merge the layers on photoshop. Then I saved one as a .PSD file and one as a .PNG file so i would be able to upload the image onto InDesign where I am making the double sided newsletter.

I went on this website called Dafont.com and I was looking and experimented on most of the fonts that could look like it could be fit for a boxing club. I ended up with these fonts and I was thinking about how I could transfer the logos to the news letter. In the end I chose the font in red because I thought that big block writing would work well with the news letter plus having the font in red matches the theme but also stands out from the dark blue background.

This image is the first draft of the newsletter being made. I was looking at examples of newsletter using google images and using adobe website to find different templates to help myself find some inspiration and ideas to help start off the newsletter. I saw an example of one where they had boxes around the images and text. I thought it was a good idea so I tried to make a similar layout on InDesign. After many tries I didn't think it would work due to the fact that the images would be looking very blurry and fuzzy. I was not able to make the lines the same thickness because of the placing of the boxes between the pages. Also, I thought about adding images and to the front of the newsletter and I thought about how fuzzy the images would because I would have to make them smaller to fit inside the framed box. I decided to start again with the design asking people about their opinions on what they would do about the design. Also, as the communication wasn't great with my client as this moment of time I was continuously trying to contact them but I was given another email who was more consistent.

This is the second updated version on the front of the newsletter. What I was able to do was use Photoshop to alter the hue/saturation on the images on the background of the newsletter. As blue and red are the clubs colours they asked me for the newsletter to have it represent those colours. The images are from the boxing club from when I went there and took pictures of the club in action. Once I changed the colours of the images I was able to place them into the InDesign document and change the layout of the front on the newsletter. What I was planning on doing was adding information but waiting for a response from my client on what he would like on the front cover. That is why the "text/information" is on the front cover. After this I had received a reply telling me what information he would like on the cover and what more can be done to be featured on the cover of the newsletter. He also wanted one where he was able to print it off black and white so the red doesn't clash with the blue on the title block of the letter.

These are the final cuts of the images I used on the final piece of the newsletter. These pictures show the diversity of the club. Showing different backgrounds and showing different abilities. I figured by showing these images it would show the deeper side to the clubs meaning and how it can be so helpful for the kids attending the clubs with such things like gaining a new qualification in teaching boxing or helping people escape or deal with problems at home or school. I figured that using these images would help advertise the club as a helpful and friendly club that helps children in anyway they can. Some people didn't want their face the pictures which is understandable so I was able to use some off the shoulder shots to represent how the club works and how they really affect their lives. I thought this shots will help humanise the club and make it seem like its not a harsh club but it shows how they enjoy it there and how they are very accepting for whoever comes through. I thought about each shot that was taken and majority of them didn't want their faces on the front cover which is understandable. So, I had to think of away I could show their emotion through their boxing and fitness without showing their identities/faces. I used a mixture of wide shots and off the shoulder shows to show their dedication towards their work within the gym. These pictures can also be seen by people in schools wanting to join the club. Having fun and dedication is the key thing into this club and I wanted to make sure I had it involved in the majority of the photos.

During this project. I had regular contact with the client and his team asking what he and his team would like. Here are some of the email replies he sent to me. I was sending him updates on the newsletter and asking what he thought was best for the newsletter as he wold be handing it out to people who are interested into going to the club. I was always asking for him to
update me into what he would want. He was very reasonable I thought. He didn't ask of things that I couldn't do. I explain to him and his team about things I wouldn't be able to do but together we made a joint decision about what I would do for the club in terms of getting their identity out to the public. They've explained that they've only been running for a year but they are determined to get what they are achieving which is more people attending which means more possible funding for them to improve themselves and have the funding to improve their facilities as well. I figured that email was the best way to communicate to the client so I am able to send them the newsletter files in case they have adobe products they can. I realised that they are a busy club and I expected them not to reply as soon I thought they could.

So when completing this newsletter, they asked me to fill in with some information I had to gather myself, they gave me websites to take a look on. One which was http://islingtontribune.com/article/boxing-club-is-worth-its-weight-in-gold-for-kids. this was a article about the clubs first birthday being in Islington and how they were being visited by high ranking officers in celebration. I used the font from DaFonts.com experimented with different fonts which is shown towards the top of the page. I made sure that the blue and red theme was still involved within the newspaper because that is what they've asked for as this was the clubs colours. I figured that I should need to add important information for parents to read so I places readable fonts and colours for the newsletter. I was able to add engaging images for the front cover and I was able to add whatever they've asked or eg. adding the
"making a real difference" phrase or keeping the blue and red theme. What I was able to make was a printable version of the newsletter by changing the font colour to white so when the letter is printed the audience would be able to see the words clearly within them blending into the the background. I was able to send the clients both of them just in case the clients wanted to print the newsletter off in black and white they would be able to do that where ever they are.

When completing the back cover of the newsletter, I still had to add information about the club and their sponsorships /partners. How I decided to accomplish this is have the text in alternating colours because this can be printable and it can be readable and has not got a complicated deign while popping colours as mainly parents and kids would be reading this newsletter so there wouldn't be able need to have bright colours. Especially as it would come away from the red and blue theme from the boxing club in general. I also decided to add their sponsors because they should be recognised for the work and people would be able to search this sponsor and find out what more they do with community clubs.
