Proposal
Campaign Pitch.
Main goal
The objective of my chosen social campaign is to create more
awareness about knife crime which is increasing more in within the UK in recent
years. Making the target audience aware of what knife crime is and the
consequences of using or carrying a knife. Also, helping friends and families
realise the signs of someone being radicalised and encouraged into gang culture
which increases the chance of someone becoming a victim of Knife Crime.#
Background/Current Situation
“Knife” crime,
crime involving an object with a blade or sharp instrument, is a persistent and
worrying concern, especially as it impacts particularly upon young people and
the disadvantaged, and various remedies have been tried over the years. Currently,
London recorded the highest rate of 137 offences involving a knife per 100,000
population in 2016/2017 with an increase of 23 offences from 2015/2016. Unlike
Surrey which had the lowest rate of offences per 100,000 individuals. Every
year it gets higher and that is because many people don’t know the consequences
or knowledge on when dealing with someone who is carrying a knife. March 2017/
2018, 21,044 disposals given for possession of a knife or offensive weapon.
People ages 10-17 were the offenders in 21% of the cases
Target Audience
The target audience is meant to be everyone living or working
the London. However, the main target audience it between 10-18 year olds. This
is because in recent news, there has been a lot of young people been reported
at victims. It has been reported that children as young as five years old have
been caught with knives as police admit there is a worry epidemic of knife
carrying among young people. Things from samurai swords to axes have been
confiscated in schools and reported to the police. I want to help reach
awareness from people entering secondary school to people leaving college and
sixth form as they are the main group to be targeted by the epidemic.
Concept
What I will be making to get my message across are posters
that can be placed in educational centres, colleges and schools, bus stop
adverts and adverts on large vehicles. Also, making leaflets to be able to hand
out to schools and different types of places and conventions.
Elements you intend to create of your campaign
I have decided to make posters because I feel like that it
one of the ways to gain awareness in the public eye. Making it on bus shelters
will help the audience digest the information as they would be standing waiting
for their bus they can learn about different things about how to help someone.
Same with making it on billboards and bus advertisement. Making leaflets will
have more information that can be handed out at talks to young people at
schools and education centres and help people learn more about carrying the
offensive weapon. Also how to get involved in stopping knife crime.
Other institutions or organisations connected
Other different well known social campaigns such as
#knifefree, no knives, better lives and your choice, your future. I will be looking
and these campaigns and analysing how they get their point across. They’ll help
me by helping me structure how I can tell the information and help others
across the UK. Obviously, there are loads more campaigns and I’ll be looking at
them too but these are the main three campaigns I’ll be using to help get my
point across.
Proposed primary research
I am able to speak to member from the Metropolitan Police and
get their ideas about the knife crime epidemic happening in London and this
moment of time. I can get accurate stats and find out if they are running any
type of campaigns by borough or town etc. I can get the most out of
interviewing people who have actually dealt with situations dealing with knife
crime victims or people carry.
Proposed secondary research
I can get lots of relevant facts and opinions from people’s
stories online through different campaigns online. Researching the facts on
these websites and finding out what they do to help spread awareness within
London for example, if there is any youth clubs in certain areas with high
knife crime rates that might be able to help people stay of the streets and
help vulnerable people stay out of gangs which promote this type of behavior.
Short summary
In conclusion, we all know how serious knife crime is and by
bringing campaigns and intensives to help people drop their weapons, it will
help bring London’s knife crime rate lower and keep London’s youths safer.
